Will the UDI program make me a bad ass?
The Urban Defense Program is not meant or intended to create “bad asses,” it is designed to help you survive violent attacks in a real world setting. The term “bad ass” is thrown around far too much, and the vision put forth by that is misleading. Remember, for every bad ass out there, there is someone badder, and the real “bad asses” will tell you the same thing. The key is to stay alive, that is what we are here to help you with.

I am an experienced fighter/martial artist, will this really be beneficial for me?
As an experienced fighter or martial artist you probably don’t need us to tell you that every little bit helps. Our program will help to add to your base or foundation and give you something to add to your art with great effect. Our intent is that people with experience can take our system and add their own system or techniques to it for a more dynamic style of their own.

I have no experience and have never been in a fight, can I attend a seminar?
You do not need any experience for the UDI system to work for you. While we intend for experienced fighters and martial artists to be able to add their own art to it to make it more dynamic, it is also intended to work right out of the box. However, like anything in life we recommend that you continue your training and don’t simply rely on a three day seminar to be the end all be all. Even if you just find a training partner to continuously practice what you learn in our seminar or find a martial art school that fits your personality, you need to continue training to be the best you can be.

If you do not have a martial art in mind but would like to take one and want to know what would be best for you ask us and we can help point you in the right direction. We also have quite a few different martial arts in our school and you would be welcome to join us. However, if we don’t offer a style that you think would be right for you, we know a lot of styles and schools and can probably help you find a good one.

Is this program good for anybody regardless of physical conditioning or experience?
Our seminar will be easier on you if you are in moderate to good condition, however, everybody needs to be able to protect themselves and their family so we can work with anybody in any condition. We are more interested in your and your families safety than we are in being exclusive to people in exceptional fitness or physical condition.

Will the UDI program help me get ready for fighting in MMA?
The UDI program is not designed to fit well within a competitive sport environment (we don’t play well with others). If you are looking to enter the world of MMA and competitive fighting venues then we recommend that you find a good MMA or Brazilian JuJutsu school. There are a lot of great schools out there that will give you a better shot at that goal than we would. If you would like to know of some good schools please let us know and we will be happy to point you in the right direction. One of our instructors (Ken Pipes) is the owner of Scrapyard Fightwear and knows a lot of great schools and great fighters, he can probably help you find the right place.

Do you teach women?
Absolutely! As part of the Urban Defense Institute we have a program geared specifically for women. The program is called “Safety Takes Brains” and begins it’s focus on situational awareness, providing you with information that will help you to avoid being assaulted in the first place. Because we know that life happens and nothing is fool proof, we put the exclamation point on the seminar with techniques that are geared to help escape any number of grabs or holds that men typically like to use.

If you would like to find out more about Safety Takes Brains Self-Defense, or buy our book, please visit http://www.safetytakesbrains.com.

Is the UDI program appropriate for kids?
We are absolutely happy to perform children’s seminars that help them deal with the common bully all the way to escaping an adult attacker. The program has a strong focus in situational awareness and how to know where to run from danger. We avoid techniques that will get them in trouble on the playground, but give them tools to keep them safe just the same.

I do not like confrontation, will the UDI program work for me?
There are not very many people who truly LIKE confrontation, but regardless, confrontation still finds us on a regular basis. The ideal would be to never have it come to us, but the truth is that it does. The UDI program is geared to help you deal with confrontation when you find it suddenly in your face. We go into the psychology of stress, fear and conflict and how to deal with the normal emotions and physical effects you will go through and how to manage them and use them to your advantage.

However, we can only give you the tools, it will be up to you to implement them. So in short, yes the UDI program will work for you, but we’re not going to lie, it will be up to you to make it work.

I have a fear of fighting, will the UDI program help me with that?
Fear is a funny thing, sometimes it’s rational and well placed and sometimes it’s irrational. Whatever it is that makes you afraid of fighting is very personal to you. We can help give you tools to deal with that fear and confront it. But much like the answer above, it will be up to you to actually make it work.

The first thing to know about fear is that it is a natural emotion and is a good thing, it is what keeps us from touching a hot stove. The only people that feel no fear are sociopaths and liars. The trick isn’t to have no fear, but to overcome it, harness it and use it to your advantage. Any time you get into a confrontation, your opponent is experiencing fear as well, you may not notice it because he has learned to overcome it, or at least hide it. You are not the only one experiencing some kind of fear in that confrontation. They don’t know what you are bringing to the fight any more than you know what they are bringing.

So the UDI program will help with this, but ultimately it will be up to you to implement what we teach.

How long is a typical seminar?
A typical seminar is three days and progressive, each day will build on the previous days lessons, just as each lesson within each day builds on the previous lesson. We don’t recommend missing a day, if you cannot attend the entire seminar we recommend that you wait until a future seminar that you will be able to attend in it’s entirety. Missing a day, or even half a day could have you lost and not getting the entire impact of the seminar.

Do you offer advanced seminars?
Yes we offer advanced courses in our principles and techniques. The UDI base seminar is meant to be a simple base system that will work out of the box, but if you want to get a little more advanced training in any of the different aspects of our system we offer advanced seminars in each of the different topics covered.

How do I set up a seminar with you?
If you would like to set up a seminar for your group or school please visit our contact page and give us the details of when, where and how many will be attending and we will get back with you as soon as we can to set it up.

Are you willing to travel to put on a seminar for our group or school?
Yes we are willing to travel, but due to our low prices we will need travel and lodging to be covered. We are not picky or fancy so the lodging does not have to be anything fancy, just someplace to lay our heads. Even if you have a room at your school we will be content. Besides, we will be spending our time training and will not be needing to be spending any time in a fancy room.
